This To Follow That is a live visual conversation between Rachel Adams and Ian Giles which took place between July and September 2009.
Rachel Adams //
Rachel graduated from Edinburgh College of Art 2009. She hasbeen selected for New Work Scotland 2009 at the Collective Gallery, Edinburgh. In 2008 Rachel received the Andrew Grant Award from Edinburgh College of Art. Rachel has recently exhibited at Catalyst Arts, Belfast.
Rachel makes sculptures and drawings, which use a flirtatious abstract language that hovers between the two- and three-dimensional. Lowly, everyday materials are transformed into artworks by straightforward processes, completely altering their meaning.
Ian Giles //
Ian graduated from Chelsea College of Art, London 2008. His work was selected for The Graduates at Battersea Arts Centre, 2008. Recent solo exhibitions include ‘After Cravan’ at Oriel Davies Gallery, Wales (2009). Ian has exhibited in group shows at Paradise Row, London; Chelsea Futurespace, London and at the Arnolfini, Bristol. In 2007 he received the Chelsea Arts Club Trust Travel Bursary. In May 2009 Ian took part in an international residency of visual art and performance at the Academi di Belle Arti, Macerata, Italy.
Ian’s work is often humorous and laboriously futile. His performance and video works demand of him a total physical concentration even in their absurdity – from sinking a boat at sea to dancing on a hot tin plate. Amongst the seemingly ridiculous however he highlights the human condition – suggesting that we are all struggling, struggling towards inevitable failure.
